Getting there

Red-eye to Cancun, difficult to sleep- brought an inflatable beach ball for a pillow on the plane, worked fairly well. I was tempted to throw it out there to see how long the passengers would keep it in the air, but Manuel wouldn’t let me. Couldn’t wait for our early morning layover in Dulles, so I could go to Dunkin Donuts- very disappointed that they didn’t have a coconut donut, had to live with chocolate.

In Cancun, we walked rapidly past all the vendors, and got to the nearly full bus to Playa del Carmen as it was starting to pull out, but they waited for us to buy a ticket ($10 USD each). Manuel sat next to an RCI rep, and I sat next to a Mexican travel agent, so we both had a chance to practice our Spanish during the 50 minute ride through greenery. First sight of the Caribbean was as exciting as ever, always amazed at the color.

Ferry cost 140 pesos each, one way ($10.77 USD), entertainment included.

We walked from the ferry, past the tourist traps, to the first restaurant that had comida corrida (daily special), and had lunch for 45 pesos ($3.46)- beefsteak, beans, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, big basket of tortillas and chips. Then found a supermarket for a few things, then taxi to El Cid La Ceiba ($10 USD!!).
